- Adobe and Garamond - the most recent evolution
- Adobe's type resources - there's a lot on their website. You might also check their design center.

- Search the Met's online library (try Gaugin for a start, p. 195 in your book)
- The Artcyclopedia - find works of art online (also tells you what copyright restrictions each site has)

Font design:
Fontlab: Make the font you design functional!
Chank's font-making tutorial. I love this, partially because I used to do it the same way. Adobe Streamline, Fontographer, and a scanner. At least Illustrator is still useful, and Live Trace has replaced Streamline.
Do you want your handwriting to be a font but don't want to make it yourself? Fontifier loves you. So does Chank, but you'd better have some $ saved up for him to do it.
